This project was implemented in a former village school not far from Tournai (wallonie) close to the Belgian border. Classrooms partitions were removed in order to create intense light spaces. The garden with the pool replaced to the playground, the courtyard became a covered terrace. This building from the 20’s was renovated and transformed to welcome a family. Interior designing rests on various concepts:

• Highlighting the existing architecture and rough materials in some places, referring to the past.

• Working on lighting to create an atmosphere

• Working on indoor and outdoor spaces, creating perspectives and framing, elaborating symmetry and volumes proportions.

Covered in trees with restricted access and falling steeply to the river, the site posed a number of design challenges, including Environmental and Bushfire Overlays (BAL29). The form and materiality of the house were guided by the views, orientation, topography and context.

The twin butterfly roofs lift the eaves to catch daylight from every direction and enhance the sense of space and connection to outdoors. The house’s dual ‘wings’ slide with the landscape to create privacy for neighbouring properties while maximising views, daylight and access to external entertaining spaces. A glazed circulation slot creates a dramatic but efficient connection between the two forms.

The generous roof terrace with external fireplace and arbour allow for contemporary outdoor entertaining as the natural terrain of the site falls below, relatively untouched.

Ett Hem Hotel | Studioilse

Ett Hem, the unusual and different hotel is located in Stockholm, Sweden.

Description by Studioilse:

Built in the first years of the twentieth century, this building was home to a government official and his wife, a lady with a love for the aesthetics of Karin Larsson, who collected objects, textiles and furniture from all over Sweden. This was a time when the home became the focus of art and life, and design was integrated into the everyday. The influence of the Arts & Crafts, the romantic notion of national character and the delight in the design of useful things, combined with an impulse to embed a family in a place through architecture. All together this created a very special moment for domestic architecture in Sweden.

Ett Hem, built in 1910, dates from this moment. The house in Sköldungagatan was designed by architect Fredrik Dahlberg. With its protective brick shell it weaves a coat against the harsh Swedish winter. In its interiors it has both the robust, dark-timberlined rooms of public life, the masculine realms.

Each room has its own cocktail cabinet in gleaming brass. And throughout the house is the owners’ personal collection of art and photography. At the heart of it all is the kitchen. Furnished with a big table, comfy chairs and settles.

Ett Hem is not the usual hotel. If Ett Hem is an idea of home, of comfort and security, of familiarity, the other is an institution, a series of services. Ett Hem is something very different. It is active, where the guests can subtly shift the conditions, the atmospheres, the conviviality. A hotel is passive, a place that exists with or without you.

While it has all the facilities expected today, Ett Hem is a place that allows the guest to become part of it. Guests are treated as friends of the family. They can turn on the television in the sitting room, borrow our car or take the dog for a walk. They can make themselves at home, help themselves from the fridge. The food changes with the seasons, the rooms warm up with stoves and cool down with a fresh breeze from an open window. Ett Hem is connected to the street and the sky, to the city, it is not a machine cut off from life outside. Ett Hem is as glamorous as it is casual, but while it is a luxury, it is not a luxury hotel.

The value of Ett Hem comes through the pleasure of proximity to beautiful things, of being in spaces that tell a story, and through an ethic of generosity and care. And to a degree, of being left alone to live in a very special house. This from the moment you step through the college door, enter the courtyard into the garden and go up the steps to the front door. In the entrance hall a fire is lit when its cold outside, and fresh cut flowers from the garden are arranged on the table. Check in and wait for friends by the fire. Ett Hem will feel familiar. It is a place to use as you please. Downstairs in the sitting room there are sofas to sink into and games to play. The library, a room to disappear into, is stacked high with books you actually want to read. And the leafy glass house, where you can take breakfast during the day, or where you can enjoy a twinkling feast at night. Upstairs the bedrooms have a warm domestic feel with a sophisticated edit of vintage and new pieces in tactile materials such as cane, wood, leather.

Single level built in 2016 with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms on a 33, 579 square foot lot in the prime lower Trousdale Estates section of Beverly Hills. Epic scale with walls of glass that disappear and blur the line between indoors/outdoors. A Fifty foot Zero edge infinity pool and a massive outdoor spa hug both ends of the living room. Designed for large scale entertaining; the vast living room offers exceptionally high ceilings and converts into a luxurious Screening Room as well. A state of the art Bulthaup main Kitchen is backed by a full catering kitchen. Formal Dining Room with a custom fifteen foot fireplace. Lucite temperature controlled double sided wine cellar. Master Suite with views of Beverly Hills, and closets that rival the finest stores on Rodeo Drive. Master Bath clad in book matched calacutta slab marble. Four additional “cabana rooms” each with walls of glass opening to the lush grounds and pool beyond. Attached staff quarters. Naman Residence project locates on the famous Non Nuoc Beach in Danang Vietnam. The Project contains 40 Villas which is categorized into for type of A, B, C, D. We would like to introduce the architecture and interior of Naman Residence – Villa A

This is a very high quality project which inspires us a lot, require the most elegant and luxury design can adapt high standard of living but still remains the feeling of the beach. The idea is mainly focus on how to maximize privacy for every family but still create vast of pleasure spaces with nature integrating the sea.

To maximize the project’s efficiency, the master-plan is well organized but the way is too narrow with high density. Within this condition, our team’s goal is to make a creative and effective design to not only satisfied maximum privacy but also create extra benefits from natural voids and gardens.

Each villa has multi-dimensional landscape with overflow pools and tropical gardens. For every villa, our design also takes advantage of space using by lifting-twisting the upper block for bedrooms with privacy and open views. The lower block with living-dining-kitchen-bedroom has the direct connection to the pool and landscape. Moreover, we put waterscape into the rooftop of the lower block in order to cool down the whole building and improve the rooftop landscape aesthetically.

Density is now not a big problem, every villa has its own garden filled up with skylights and surrounding green environment. Our design philosophy is how to inside-out the initial using space, outside-in the natural gardens enhancing the luxury-home feeling.

The materials used in constructing the house are local materials to reduce the transporting fee and save the budget of Naman Villa. The design of the house is simple and sleek, so the cost for construction is not so high. The house is constructing with Hurricane protected structure but still remain natural ventilation.

This project is a conversion of a gritty 250m2 brick warehouse in the old industrial area of Fitroy into a family home. The former industrial building is a mixture of intimately scaled family spaces and vast entertaining voids. Two full height voids act as the lungs of the design bringing both light and sky views deep into the internal space. The private areas such as the study and bedroom are accommodated on the first floor by volumes of a more intimate scale.
The Fitzroy Loft was the Winner of 2016 Australian Interior Design Award for Residential Design.

The house was designed for temporary and permanent stay. It is locate in Norway, just near the water. Given the location and the steep plot it had been desirable that the house be dug into the landscape, so it would act as an element integrated into the nature. The design of the house allows a close interaction with the surrounding nature and the beautiful scenery. It provides a feeling of being outdoor when inside. South-facing glazed openings from floor to ceiling provides ample daylight. Veranda can transform if we need to save important temperature in the cold season. Interior has high capability and naturalness. The house has necessary space for life. There is common space includes a kitchen, living room with a fireplace and bedroom, so there is a bathroom and technical room.

The owners wanted to build a getaway house outside of Los Angeles where they could entertain and find a balance between the modern design they desired and a more direct relationship to nature. After a two year search in the Southern California region they discovered pristine acreage near Montecito at the top of a mountain and adjacent to national park land. The site strategy is one of slow revelation and discovery of the house and- ultimately- the view. The road, which had to be built for access, brings the visitor to a point below the house- where a formal stair leads up to the entry sequence. The front door frames and reveals views of the Santa Barbara coastline through the courtyard. A 40’ wide horizontal ‘panavison’-esque opening gives the house a pavilion-like atmosphere. The dwelling is organized around three courtyards; the primary one at the heart of the house also serves as the front entrance and outdoor living room. The courtyards have a dual purpose: they bring in ample natural light and ventilation but also provide protection from the strong winds that can race across the mountain. The rough and very thick boardform concrete walls, custom color-mixed to match the dark red and brown tones of the earth at the site, form a rugged shell that is punctuated by large openings and reveals of the Alaskan cedar wood siding. The inner shell’s warm wood and windows into the protected courtyards create a warm and tactile interior respite from the hardy environment.

One-storey Pavilion of glass, concrete and wood located in the suburbs of Chisinau. Smooth stretch of trapezoidal shape is surrounded on 3 sides by the residental area, that dictated the shape of the House, but despite this plan forms the inner courtyard of the correct form of the pool over which hovers the design house.
Clear and concise exterior lines flow in the Interior of the House.
The House is spread over much of the area, all the houses are built around a courtyard.
In addition to the common zone in the House three bedrooms of which two babies and one my master bedroom with bathroom and dressing room, as well as auxiliary facilities and a games room.
Space home simply and discreetly.

With close proximity to Lake Michigan and a short travel distance from the Chicago, the woods and fields of Southwestern Michigan and Northwestern Indiana have offered Chicagoans weekend reprieves from urban intensity for decades. The owners of this cottage sought to gain a sense of privacy with their vacation property and preferred pastoral views of the natural landscape over views to the lake waters. They were fortunate to find the land that fit their aesthetic aspirations, and subsequently desired a home that would meet their modern concept for living.

This cottage was designed with a simple structural system, a horizontal red cedar rain screen on the North, and a wall of operable glass on the South. The open plan of the kitchen, dining, living area, and porch intensifies views to the meadow and woods to the South while also maximizing solar gain in the winter. Radiant heat in the ground concrete floor is enhanced by passive solar gain and runs throughout the three-bedroom cottage. The arrangement of rooms and glass exterior walls allows for panoramic views of the outdoor environment, while providing the most energy efficient operation. A fireplace positioned in the front hallway divides the bedrooms from the living area, and a custom sofa bench set into the wall across from it creates a traditional fireplace inglenook.

Red cedar was used to establish a material warmth and visual interest on the exterior, using a board and batten-like pattern for an open screen and tongue and groove siding to establish the solid form of the adjacent volume, separated by the entry. The warmth of material and visual identity is continued on the interior—the same wood siding is used on interior walls and cabinets, and the wood rain screen is visible from the screened porch and kitchen window.

Set in a Lisbon neighbourhood from the thirties, the apartment occupies the last two floors of a building, benefiting from views that from northeast are headed by urban landscape and from southeast, in turn, are dominated by great canopies of trees that inhabit a secular garden near by the building.
The strategic position of the apartment due to his urban context in articulation with domestic space issues prompted the project to focus on the following principles:
Spatial and functional readaptation in order to explore crossed views, communicability and continuity of and between spaces in active articulation with the pre-existing constrains;
Program organization and distribution through a logic that promotes clear distinction between social areas [terrace, living room, dinning room, kitchen, library] from service areas [laundry, wc, vertical accesses] on the groundfloor and private area [bedrooms] on the 1st floor.
Concentration of infrastructures, equipment and storage into functional walls and cores, in order to free up space.
Enrichment of the relation between interior and exterior through the redesign of the openings, emphasizing the connection between those areas
Selection of materials that reinforce the natural light of the overall spaces through the extensive use of white color in articulation with the wood pavements and the ceramic tiles of the terrace.
Insertion of the “natural” as an element brought in from the secular garden, that is interpreted and reinvented into domestic environment;

MAIN ELEMENTS OF THE SPACE

THE WALL

Commited to create a unique living space, the large functional Wall, with its 11.5 meters long,(which concentrate equipment, storage, cooking area etc.) works simultaneously as scenario and as an operating background to support the diverse and multiple actions of the social space.
Mutable in its usage conditions, it allows various interactions and different hierarchies between spaces.
Panels that open to reveal the stairs and close to privatize the rooms, panels that open while cooking and close when the kitchen becomes an workspace, panels that extend or gather inside the cabinets gap to individualize spaces, and so are manageable from this structuring as an unifying element of the space.

THE LIVING ROOM CEILING

If the Great wall, with its vertical expression, ensures the spatial continuity, also the design of ceiling contributes to this notion of extension and unification.
The rhythm of the beams that make up the horizontal plan of the social area, thus reinforces the initial and intuitive desire to create a large space, that goes through the full depth of the apartment, and is crossed by diverse environments, uses and actions.

Located in the small seaside settlement of Kakanui, near Oamaru, the design challenge required a concept that would make the most of the beautiful sea views and sunlight, while balancing the need for privacy from neighbouring properties and the street. The challenge also included working to a small footprint, while maximising the comfort of interior living spaces.

The Whittaker Cube was designed as two levels of just 8 metres x 8 meters with immaculate detailing of durable materials and a cost effective structure. Despite the compact footprint, the design incorporates three bedrooms, while upper level living achieves a light and spacious feel with American Oak featuring throughout the modern interior.

Cedar cladding provides an effective rain screen and allows flashings to be cleverly concealed, while also lending the exterior a simple uncluttered look.

The house occupies a hill in Montauk with a distant view of ocean, a site that the owners, a couple with two young boys, spent years to find. It is the couple’s reprieve from their home in the city, to share the outdoor lifestyle with their family and to remember their teenage years together in Montauk. The house design prompts the owners to interact with the surrounding environment, evoking experiences of camping.
A departure from typical residential planning, the house is entered through multiple areas for different guests and occasions.

Large glass doors slide open to the living, dining and kitchen area for a large gathering; a smaller scaled swing door for an occasional guest opens to the center hall with a view of the ocean. A sequence of auxiliary spaces – beach equipment area, outdoor shower, sand and mudroom – creates a seamless ritual from the daily activities for the family and friends. In all living areas and bedrooms, glass doors and insect screens slide in and out from pocket walls, transforming rooms to screened porches or spaces completely open to the landscape.

The living area, a double height space with kitchen, dining and living area, has thirty-six feet wide glass doors that pocket into southern and northern walls. When open, the dining room becomes a picnic area and the living room fireplace becomes a campfire. Multiple layers of bronzed metal fabric at the clerestory windows in the living area fold and unfold to adjust sunlight for optimal brightness & temperature of the space. These operable architectural elements use the natural environment to create suitable living conditions.

The house is environmentally friendly in its overall construction and planning with such specifics as geo-thermal heating & cooling, shading & venting systems, solar panels, organic finishes and materials. Lending to the structure’s sustainability, the house is assembled, rather than built, with prefabricated foundation, panel siding and efficient built-ins minimizes construction debris or toxins such as concrete foundation tar on the site. With the owner’s initial premise of camping, the design and functionality of the house promotes a memorable experience for friends and family in the natural environment.

The design of South Circular Road Residence focused on the development of an open plan family living, kitchen and dining area that had a sense of personality to it.

The building was well laid out with lots of natural light, but it lacked character and colour and fun. We kept things light and airy but incorporated more colour. Blue and teal tones were selected to contrast against the subtle wall colour, but also to complement the overall palette of existing items.

The kitchen and living rooms of this family home were a key focus, as they would be the most used spaces within the house. As such, these spaces needed to both functional and fun. The overall aesthetic goal was to create a feeling of calm sophistication in a space that didn’t take itself too seriously.

An eclectic mix of dining chairs adds character and interest to the intimate dining space, which is partitioned with a Persian runner rug.
