Description by Powerhouse Company:

Villa CG is a family home in the eastern Dutch city of Enschede, close to the German border. The clients, a couple with two children, commissioned Powerhouse Company in 2013 to design ‘the most beautiful house on the street’ within a strict budget. Villa CG is a two-storey home characterized by horizontality. Our design takes its cues from the surrounding low hedge to create a house that is about balance and equilibrium, symmetry and grace.

Descritpion by NORMLESS Architecture Studio:

A new Cups Nine opened its doors, this time as a Cafe & Patisserie store. Right in the heart of the school district and opposite of one of the most popular city’s squares, the Old Despotiko, the new Cups Nine comes to shake up the city for one more time and reintroduce the street coffee shops. The owners envisioned a new space that can serve their best seller coffee as well as their new products adopting them to the needs of the modern life.

The architects translated this vision into a space where the boundaries between the interior and the exterior space are blurred. The seating area, the serving bar are all flexible and accessible either from the inside or the outside. It becomes unclear where the store ends and the street begin. This was mainly achieved through the surrounding window frames, which were all custom and handmade metal work. The windows open and the bar area doubles inside the arcade. A similar thing happens on the street side where the wooden tables slide and move on the other side so that you can enjoy your beverage overlooking the city. Inside the long and narrow space, the store is divided into the serving and seating area by a long wooden bar, which is interrupted by a metal light box that is the cashier point. All woodwork is again custom made by a local carpenter.  As soon as you open the door you immediately take notice of the impressive flooring, which is a successful blend of laminate and hexagon black tiles that run through the store and continue on the wooden bars. The interior and exterior walls, as well as the ceiling are all covered with Kourasanit, a natural coating.

The remarkable mural paintings of Asteris Dimitriou, decorate the walls and has become one of the shop’s trademarks.

The new Cups Nine store came to change with its unique space and products, yet again, the urban landscape of the city of Trikala. ­

Description by Jesse Bennett Architect:

Planchonella House was designed with a simple idea in mind- to create a series of joyful spaces to inspire and enrich daily life. Set in tropical north Queensland, the house embraces the heritage rainforest surrounds and utilises experimental passive design methods. The simplistic approach and use of Lo-Fi technologies results in a raw and honest dwelling.

Contours of the site ridgeline have formed basis for the playful lines utilised in concrete profiles. As not to protrude out with the ridge, the profile is mirrored and cuts back in to the ridge. Visual amenity from surrounding lower areas has been maintained with this design in that rather than creating a dominant form on the landscape, it tucks back in at the critical highest most revealing point. The wings created each side of the ridge float into the surrounding rainforest and become part of the tree canopy.

The large flat roof with generous overhang acts as a rainforest canopy above, minimal walls and columns in between allow for un-obstructed views and moments to be shared with the landscape. This omission of boundaries between inside and outside gives an openness and quality of space that is surreal, living completely within and engulfed by a beautiful landscape. The resolution of plan follows a purely functional approach to use of space, privacy, visual connection and passive design principles.

The plan wraps around the courtyard space, which is considered the second hearth (after the kitchen) or perhaps lungs to the entire dwelling. The courtyard contributes much to the house and its occupants, it is an oasis that provides sun, light, ventilation, happiness, activity, visual stimulation, and entertainment. It also provides connection to the surrounding rainforest, connection from one part of the house to another, and acts as the focal node to the promenade experience of moving through the house.

This project of sustainable house is located in the protected landscape area Nature 2000, surrounded by beech and oak forests, horse riding meadows and agricultural lands.

The building is designed in way to optimize the energy gains and losses. Sustainability of the house comes not only from unique technology but also through architectural form and shape that harmonizes with nature. Simulations of the sun position in a different period of the year allowed to create proper arrangement of the house layout and glass partition in way to gain heat in winter and to reduce overworming in summertime.

The house will be build in the Izodom technology. This is energy efficient and eco-friendly technologie that allows to minimize heat loss.

Description by KVDA Architects:

The house was designed for temporary and permanent stay. It is locate in Norway, just near the water. Given the location and the steep plot it had been desirable that the house be dug into the landscape, so it would act as an element integrated into the nature. The design of the house allows a close interaction with the surrounding nature and the beautiful scenery. It provides a feeling of being outdoor when inside. South-facing glazed openings from floor to ceiling provides ample daylight. Veranda can transform if we need to save important temperature in the cold season. Interior has high capability and naturalness. The house has necessary space for life. There is common space includes a kitchen, living room with a fireplace and bedroom, so there is a bathroom and technical room.

Decsription by LINE Architects:

One-storey Pavilion of glass, concrete and wood located in the suburbs of Chisinau. Smooth stretch of trapezoidal shape is surrounded on 3 sides by the residental area, that dictated the shape of the House, but despite this plan forms the inner courtyard of the correct form of the pool over which hovers the design house.
Clear and concise exterior lines flow in the Interior of the House.
The House is spread over much of the area, all the houses are built around a courtyard.
In addition to the common zone in the House three bedrooms of which two babies and one my master bedroom with bathroom and dressing room, as well as auxiliary facilities and a games room.
Space home simply and discreetly.

With close proximity to Lake Michigan and a short travel distance from the Chicago, the woods and fields of Southwestern Michigan and Northwestern Indiana have offered Chicagoans weekend reprieves from urban intensity for decades. The owners of this cottage sought to gain a sense of privacy with their vacation property and preferred pastoral views of the natural landscape over views to the lake waters. They were fortunate to find the land that fit their aesthetic aspirations, and subsequently desired a home that would meet their modern concept for living.

This cottage was designed with a simple structural system, a horizontal red cedar rain screen on the North, and a wall of operable glass on the South. The open plan of the kitchen, dining, living area, and porch intensifies views to the meadow and woods to the South while also maximizing solar gain in the winter. Radiant heat in the ground concrete floor is enhanced by passive solar gain and runs throughout the three-bedroom cottage. The arrangement of rooms and glass exterior walls allows for panoramic views of the outdoor environment, while providing the most energy efficient operation. A fireplace positioned in the front hallway divides the bedrooms from the living area, and a custom sofa bench set into the wall across from it creates a traditional fireplace inglenook.

Red cedar was used to establish a material warmth and visual interest on the exterior, using a board and batten-like pattern for an open screen and tongue and groove siding to establish the solid form of the adjacent volume, separated by the entry. The warmth of material and visual identity is continued on the interior—the same wood siding is used on interior walls and cabinets, and the wood rain screen is visible from the screened porch and kitchen window.

Islington Home | Scenario Architecture

Description by Scenario Architecture:

   This lovely Georgian house has one main limitation – it’s very narrow floor plan, only 4.4 m wide.
Our challenge was to create a sense of width in the basement / garden level which houses the new kitchen, sitting area and dinning area.
This called for the utilisation of every little corner of the Lower ground floor. Space under the stairs was maximised and some furniture were built in against the walls. in the middle of the house a large glazed roof, contributes to a sense of width .and allow light to penetrate deep into the plan. The exterior design is of modest proportions and light materials, featuring a living green wall which creates a sense of continuity with the garden, and reduces the perception of built proportions of the extension itself.

Description by John Pardey Architects:

The house replaces a large suburban style two-storey house in a rural site within the New Forest. The design responds to both the client’s desire to live in close contact with nature together with the idea of making the house invisible from the public realm to deal with restrictive local planning policy directives on ‘traditional form and detail’.

This has resulted in a long, low pavilion that ‘touches the earth lightly’. Within north-south orientated the box-like form, the house provides three bedrooms that open up to the east and morning light, and a large open-plan living-dining-kitchen area, together with a master bedroom suite and study, that opens up to the west with views into a pine copse.

The low-impact design on the site is extended into the use of ground source heat pump, rainwater recycling and high levels of insulation that also make the house low-impact environmentally. The house is timber-framed, sweet chestnut-clad and has a sedum roof – a large brick chimney and hearth built in reclaimed bricks from the demolished house anchors this delicate pavilion to the site.

In 2011, the Watson House received a RIBA South/South East award and was shortlisted for the Manser Medal.
